Police pursuit/fatal motor accident in Palmerston North

PALMERSTON NORTH

At 1.55am this morning Police were pursuing a car along Featherston Street in Palmerston North.

The car had earlier been reported as stolen and had also failed to pay for petrol at a local service station.

The pursuing police car was about 400 metres behind when the offending car failed to stop at a 'T' intersection.

The car hit a powerpole before smashing into a bedroom of a house. Two occupants in the bedroom were very shaken but unhurt.

The driver of the car died on impact.

The accident is being investigated by the Palmerston North CIB. The Independant Police Complaints Authority have also been advised.

At this stage the deceased has yet to be formally identified and then Next of Kin will be notified.
