TREES and power lines were blown down and a number of roads blocked as Manawatu District felt the backlash of the storm that swept across the North Island today.

Gale-force winds caused havoc throughout most of the district, with contractors kept busy clearing roads of fallen trees and branches, as well as power lines.

Most of the roads had been reopened or given restricted access by later in the day.

Among the roads affected were Campbell Rd, near Bunnythorpe, and Pohangina Rd, north of Ashhurst.

Detours were required after Campbell Rd, from Dixons Line to “Kung-fu Corner”, was closed because of tree-fall and the need to assess the condition of other trees in the area.

Pohangina Rd, one of the main routes into the Pohangina Valley, became marginal after it was blocked by a tree early in the day.

Widespread tree-fall and downed power lines also caused the closure of Main South Rd from East Mangahuia Rd to the Apiti Golf Club.
