Maori Party MP Tariana Turia today paid tribute to the workforce at the Feltex factory in Foxton, which closed its doors today for the last time.

“The factory has been an institution in Foxton for so many years, it will be hard to imagine life without it,” said Mrs Turia.

“The Feltex workers and their families have been an important group in the local community. In times like this everyone hopes they can stay put, to maintain the collective strength of the people, and the shops, schools, clubs and marae that rely on their support.

“The loss of 80 jobs in a small town is a serious blow to the local people, and I am sure the union and company management are doing all they can to find work for everyone, but I know it won’t be easy,” she said.

“One hopes the closure is more of a change than a loss, part of an economic cycle that will bring new opportunities to the town.

“When I was younger, there were miles of flax swamps all round Foxton, and up to 50 mills processed flax fibre for ropes and carpets and other things. Then wool took over, and now dairying is becoming more important.

“I know there are already quite a few historical and tourism ventures in Foxton, and there are possibilities to develop these as attractions.

“I encourage everyone who is affected by the closure to support each other, and to stick together until you see what turns up. My best wishes are with you all,” said Mrs Turia.
