Over 30 pieces of art were submitted to Taupo District Council for the Community Art Competition which will be on display next week at the Council and Community Expo ‘Our Neighbourhood, Our Future’, at the Great Lake Centre from 14 – 16 August.

Earlier this week three experienced judges reviewed the work and decided on a winning piece. The judges included Adrienne Bolton - professional ceramic artist and tertiary tutor, Ross Palmer - practising artist and tutor and Helen Phillips - Director of Ferner Galleries in Auckland.

The panel of judges evaluated the entries based on the artist’s interpretation of the theme ‘Our Neighbourhood, Our Future’. Composition and originality was also considered. The winner will be announced at the official opening of the Expo next Thursday 14 August and will be awarded a $500 cash prize, kindly sponsored by Mighty River Power.

Whilst the judges were disappointed that there were no youth entries, they were impressed with the effort made to incorporate the theme ‘Our Neighbourhood, Our Future’.

“A couple of pieces represented the theme really well,” said Ms Bolton.

Mr Palmer said the winning entry took the theme on board and the execution was excellent. “The artwork was contemporary, original and represented the theme very well.”

Ms Phillips said the more the judges looked at the winning artwork, the more they got out of it.

Members of the public will be able to view all artwork submitted, at the Council and Community Expo being held next week (14 – 16 August, 10 – 4 daily @ the Great Lake Centre).

Copies of the commended artwork will be on display at Taupo District Council offices and the winning artwork in the open category will be featured in Towards 2019 - Taupo District's ten year plan.

The Council and Community Expo, ‘Our Neighbourhood, Our Future’ is being run by Council in conjunction with local community groups to gather the community’s ideas, dreams and aspirations for the District, to incorporate into the ten year plan ‘Towards 2019’.
