Woman rescued after walking into the sea

Police were called to Plimmerton early this morning after a female sent a text message to a family member saying that she was intending on walking out into the sea.
On arrival in the area, a Police patrol saw the female in the sea about 20 metres off shore, near the Plimmerton Boating Club. Two Police officers entered the water in an attempt to pull her from the water.
The woman disappeared from sight so the Westpac Helicopter and Mana Coastguard were deployed. The Fire Service also attended and provided additional lighting over the area the female was last seen.
The Westpac helicopter located the female about 30 metres off shore and was winched to safety. She was treated by Amulance staff before being flown to Wellington Hospital.
It is understood that the female is in a comfortable position.
The female is a 48 year old local woman and is believed to have some mental health issues.
