A proposal to hold a Forum to discuss the Taupo District Visitor Industry is going ahead after receiving a positive response from many businesses and organisations

The Forum will be held on Friday, 3rd October 2008 at Taupo’s Great Lake Centre. Forum convenor, Deputy Mayor Christine McElwee said she was encouraged by the support Mayor Rick Cooper’s proposal for an urgent district-wide Visitor Industry Forum had gained.

Clr McElwee said the first aim of this Taupo District Council Forum is to pull the many different sectors of the visitor industry together – for example the recreation sector, accommodation providers, hospitality trade, arts/cultural/historic attractions, retailers and a variety of other businesses who service the visitor industry.

She said “Being together will enable the different businesses to identify the fundamental issues that our visitor industry sectors all share in common.”

“The second aim is to provide a ‘kickstart’ opportunity for the Forum participants to determine the best way forward, in terms of developing an action plan to address the industry’s key issues,” she said.

Clr McElwee is hoping that those attending the forum will recognise the already strong foundations the industry has developed to date and will take this opportunity to share their ideas and experiences constructively. “To achieve the best outcome for our district economy, we need to collaborate and work towards making our attractions and visitor services the best they can be,” she said.
