Four teams made up of local youth are taking part in the ‘Outcasted because I was plastered’ challenge this year with the goal of reducing alcohol related incidents amongst local youth.

From 29 September through to 3 October, one person in each team must wear an arm and leg cast and be bound to a wheel chair. The other team member pushes the ‘outcast’ around town in a quest to be the team that raises the most money.

The four sponsors include Taupo District Council, the PHO, ACC and YATA (Youth Access to Alcohol). The messages that will be communicated as part of the campaign include ‘Who’s driving you home tonight?’, ‘Drinking inhibits your sporting performance’, ‘More moderation = less harm’ and ‘Think before you buy under 18’s drink’.

Each team must raise over $1,000 in the allotted 5 days or they will have to wear the cast for another week.

Taupo District Council Road Safety Coordinator Christine Hutchison said “Good luck to the four teams and thank you to the sponsors - Taupo District Council, the PHO, ACC, Café for Youth, YATA and Radioworks for their contribution to this campaign.”
