Awesome response for 5th anniversary of Ibis Bike the Lake

The 5th Anniversary Hotel Ibis Bike the Lake round the lake cycle ride is shaping up to be one of the biggest yet, cementing the popularity of the event for Rotorua.

“At the early booking deadline date we had over 850 entered, compared with 800 at the same time last year”, says event organiser Phil Clode. “A late fee for entries has now been imposed but we’re expecting more to sign up between now and the race day, which is Sunday 9th November”, adds Phil.

In total it is expected there will be 1600 cyclists and their support crew drawn to the event.

Each year staff from the Hotel Ibis Rotorua have entered the event. This year there are about 12 from the hotel participating.

A number of entrants have been involved in the event every year, such as Jonathon Chemis Executive Sous Chef of Hotel Ibis Rotorua and Novotel Rotorua Lakeside. According to Jonathon Chemis there is a great spirit amongst the staff and it gets quite competitive at times. Generally though the one lap ‘social’ event is much more relaxed.

He was initially encouraged to enter by a colleague and in the first year cycled the ‘social’ one lap around the lake – approximately 42km. “In that year I came fourth so in the next couple of years tackled the two lap version of the race and trained pretty hard for those”, he comments. “This year I’m planning to do the one lap as it’s been a busy time and I’ve not done much training!”

“I’ll probably do it again next year because it’s such a great event and there are some great prizes up for grabs. I’ve not won anything yet but you never know!” concludes Johnny.

The Hotel Ibis Rotorua has been naming rights sponsor of the event for each of the past five years, providing support to the event organisers and offering special accommodation rates for the competitors.

The finish line is on the Village Green, opposite Hotel Ibis Rotorua and Novotel Rotorua Lakeside.
