Tea in the Tent, a traditional Afternoon Tea party, was recently held in a vast marquee at Animal Village in Mangere, the third in a trio of events to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the SPCA in Auckland.

The theme was chosen to reflect events familiar to the lives of the SPCA founders in colonial times however the purpose of the event was to offer sincere and heartfelt thanks to the more than 700 supporters and volunteers who are part of the SPCA’s operations today.

More than 600 guests, predominantly current and past supporters and volunteers, were treated to champagne, tea, and such delights as watercress and cucumber sandwiches, sultana scones with jam and cream, cupcakes, meringues, chocolate truffles and buttered gingerbread cake fingers, all served on three-tiered plates by helpers, appropriately attired in frilly pinafores.

The delicious food was catered by Urban Gourmet, one of Auckland’s leading event catering companies.
Entertainment was provided by crooner, Grant Chilcott, and the Wentworth-Brewster Quartet, who seductively reprised some of the stylish ‘evergreen’ hits of the 30s and 40s.

The Hon. John Banks QSO, Mayor of Auckland City and a strong advocate for animal rights was amongst the distinguished guests speaking on the day.

The day of celebration ended with the cutting of an anniversary cake marking another very special day in the history of SPCA Auckland.
