Police and navy dive squads using underwater sonar and camera equipment have located the engine of the Robinson R22 helicopter which crashed in Lake Wanaka on Saturday evening.

The engine was positively identified at a depth of 74 metres.

Specialist dive squads have started searching the edges of the lake in the vicinity of the crash site, down to around 30m.

Further possible targets have been identified by sonar equipment, but at this stage there is no trace of the body of pilot Morgan Saxton, 31, who is believed to have died in the crash.

Snow fell to low levels overnight in the Wanaka region but conditions at the crash site are currently calm.
