A number of prominent Canterbury artists will have their works auctioned later this month to raise funds for the drug and alcohol preventive group DARE.

Paintings by Beverley Frost, Nic Phillipson, Mark Pickering, Guy Ellis, Fred Tunnicliffe and Riki Manuel will go under the hammer at the fund-raiser event in the Arts Centre’s Great Hall on November 27. Also to be auctioned will be a special landscape oil painting by Christchurch’s Hannah Riden, who this week was named the top landscape artist at the NZ Art Awards in Tauranga.

The feature of the night will be a celebrity debate about graffiti featuring Gary McCormick,

Mark Hadlow, Peter Beck, Philip Aldridge, Janice Gray, Lianne Dalziel, Nikora Nitro and The Wizard.

The DARE Foundation was established 18 years ago to educate help young New Zealanders about the pitfalls of drugs and alcohol. DARE is currently working with 54,000 young people.

DARE spokeswoman Alice Pilbrow said police youth apprehension rates had dropped 13 percent in the last 10 years but non-profit making DARE does not receive any government funding.
