Another step forward towards the development of a Taupo youth facility was made last week with the signing of a land agreement between Council and Youthtown.

The agreement signed was for the lease of land located next to the AC Baths, where Youthtown plan to install a new modular designed multi-purpose facility, to provide a safe and accessible facility for young people to gather and get involved in activities.

Youthtown Chief Executive Keith Thorpe said the team was really looking forward to getting the facility underway in Taupo. “We have worked closely with Council’s Community Support Team, who have talked to local youth and youth workers and feel confident we will be able to deliver a range of programmes to cater for the needs of the youth of Taupo.”

Mayor Rick Cooper said that the facility would provide a gathering point for youth in a positive environment. “According to surveys that have been carried out, there is a lack of youth activities for those not interested in sport. This new facility will provide local youth with fun and affordable activities run by experienced staff.”

Council’s Community Projects Officer, Jenny Steadman said she was rapt that this project was coming to fruition and thanked everyone involved with the project to date

Youthtown will pay all costs associated with providing and maintaining the facility and will also employ a co-ordinator. The building is expected to be complete by the end of this year.
