Serious assault in Mt Maunganui, 7:45pm 8 Dec 2008

A 31 year old man is currently in a critical condition in an induced coma in Waikato Hospital after being assaulted at Mt Maunganui shortly before 6p.m. on sunday the 7th December 2008. The assault took place on the roadside in Commons Avenue.
Senior Sergeant Rob Glencross of the Tauranga CIB said that the man was hit in the head with what has been described by witnesses as a claw hammer. As a result the male suffered a serious head injury and late last night he was flown to Waikato Hospityal by helicopter where emergency surgery was performed to relieve pressure on his brain.
Tauranga Police are following strong lines of enquiry but are also appealing for anyone with information about the assault to contact them on 07 577 4300.
