The New Zealand Junior Team has fully assembled Orange, NSW this week to continue training in the granite terrain prior to the Junior World Orienteering Championships in Dubbo.

Training first in Queensland granite belt, the team adjusted to the cold and blustery (single digit) winter conditions with two races on the challenging Cascades map. As usual, we are told, the courses were long and bruising. A combination of training exercises over the remainder of the week and a map walk with JWOC-mapper Eric Andrews put the team in a good position to head south to the Official JWOC training camp in Orange.

The team settled in Orange once more, most of the team having trained in the area in January. The climate is spectacularly different however with dust heat and dryness being replaced with a luscious green landscape, sleet and mercury reading a chilling 1 degree. Equipped with beanies the team ventured out training on the slippery granite of Kahli’s Rocks together with the Norwegians and Latvians. Back in the warmth of the hostel accommodation, the Australian team cowered from the rain, awaiting intermittent fine spells to blast around a short sprint course.

The majority of teams have now arrived in Orange to complete their buildups and place is buzzing. Training continues for the remainder of the week before the inland shift to Dubbo and the commencement of races.
