Two new Coromandel summer bus services introduced by Environment Waikato and Thames-Coromandel District Council, with assistance from community volunteers, have proved a hit over the holiday period.

A park and ride service from Hahei to Cathedral Cove between 2 January and 16 January carried even more passengers than expected. The purpose of this service was to help deal with the huge number of cars which traditionally visit Cathedral Cove, one of the country’s top tourist attractions. Community volunteers helped guide people to the park-and-ride service at Hahei

A second Mercury Bay service connecting Ferry Landing, Cooks Beach, Hahei and Hot Water Beach has performed to projections. The Mercury Bay service, which started Boxing Day, is set to finish this Friday.

The buses have been operated by EW and paid for by TCDC and the NZ Transport Agency

“The 28-seater buses we introduced have helped provide a more hassle free summer for local residents and holidaymakers alike,” said EW’s land transport operations manager Bevan Dale.

“They’ve helped ease traffic congestion on the peninsula during the busy holiday period and provided a safe transport option for holidaymakers and people drinking alcohol.

“It’s been very pleasing to see community volunteers helping us make this a success.”

Mr Dale said the bus services, signalled in the Regional Passenger Transport Plan, followed requests from local community boards and TCDC.

“We will do a formal review of how things have gone this year and that’ll help us plan for next summer.”

Fares for the buses have been $2 for adults and $1 for children.
