NORTHLAND

Grab a bike and come riding with Kaipara’s Mayor in Dargaville or Mangawhai on 21 February 2009

In addition to having an enjoyable outing and perhaps trying something different you will help Kaipara compete for the title of the Cycle Mad District of New Zealand. You may even leave owning the bike ridden by Mayor Neil Tiller.

The Mayoral Challenge, a national Bike Wise promotion being organised in Kaipara by Sport Northland, puts districts against others of similar size to get the greatest number of riders following their Mayors on a short cruise. Each person earns points for their district and there are bonus points for ‘celebrities’.

This is the first time the challenge has been held in Northland and all three of the region’s Mayors are taking part.

“All you need is a bike and helmet so come and give it a go, even if you are not normally a cyclist” says Mayor Tiller who is sharpening up his own cycling skills for the occasion. “The courses are suitable for all ages and whole families. You may find it opens up a whole new avenue of exercise and enjoyment.”

“Also it’s a chance to show the rest of Northland and New Zealand that Kaipara is a leader in healthy, environmentally friendly activities.”

Mayor Tiller will lead two 2 kilometer rides on February 21 2009; the first leaving Dargaville Primary School at 10.00 am with registrations opening at 9.15 am. This will be followed by one from the Hub at Mangawhai at 1.00 pm where registrations start at 12.15 pm.

Youngsters on trikes are welcome provided they are accompanied by older family members. The young trikers can ride on the footpaths.

The rides are free but all riders must register on the day. Their entry forms will go into a spot draw for the new Avanti bike ridden by Mayor Tiller plus a host of other cycle related spot prizes.

Sport Northland is looking for people to act as marshals during the Dargaville and Mangawhai rides.
