PALMERSTON NORTH

Your Mayor wants you to get on your bike and peddle furiously in an effort to have the most people on two wheels behind their mayor on the Mayoral Cycle Challenge on February 28.

All around New Zealand over the month of February Mayors large and small, fat and thin, male and female will be cycling in an effort to raise cycle awareness as part of Bike Wise month and have the largest cycle pack.

Starting from the Esplanade the route will loop around the streets of Palmerston North finishing back at the Esplanade. Registrations open at 9am.

To win the top prize and be named the most cycle mad city in New Zealand Palmerston North needs hundreds to get in behind the Mayor and his yellow jersey.

A point is awarded for each cyclist participating with extra points awarded for celebrities, business leaders, councillors and journalists.

Not only will participants help boost Palmerston North's points tally, they'll also get to enjoy entertainment, competitions and spot prizes.

“I’m really encouraging people to get behind this event and show the rest of New Zealand that we really are the most cycle mad town in the country,” says Jono.

“Palmerston North has to be one of the easiest cities in the country to get around and winning this challenge provides us with a great opportunity to prove this.”

The Mayor has put the word out to the Palmerston North councillors, some of which are already avid cyclists, to join him and their constituents in the challenge.

“Plus if there are any business people out there who want to come along for the ride it would be great to see them.”

“It’s not a race, just a great way of showing solidarity and pride in your city.”
Entry is free there will be loads of entertainment, apart from the cyclists and great spot prizes, including an Avanti Bike to give away to one lucky participant. Bring the family and join in on the fun.

Sport Manawatu is encouraging all everyone to give cycling a go during February’s Bike Wise month. Ladies that attend any of their free cycling events can go in the draw to win a trip to the Gold Coast. Visit www.sportmanawatu.org.nz for more information.
