What do Thames-Coromandel District, Bermuda and 322 other communities around the world have in common? We're all starters for the 2009 Earth Hour which will take place between 8.30 pm and 9.30 pm on March 28.

Earth Hour is when 324 towns and cities in 71 countries will switch off as many electrical devices as possible to raise awareness about how small changes can make a major difference to overall global sustainability.

“As one of the major users of electricity on the Peninsula we expect to make a worthwhile contribution to the cause and we encourage individuals, organisations and businesses to join us on the day,” says TCDC Communications Manager Mark Ebrey. “So turn off your lights for an hour and see your world in a whole new light.”

Anyone wanting more information about Earth Hour and how to get involved can check out their website at www.earthhour.org. Everyone can be part of Earth Hour by switching out their lights at 8.30pm, Saturday 28 March 2009, for one hour.

Initiated by WWF, it is hoped Earth Hour will be the world’s largest mass participation event and involve one billion people in more than 1000 cities around the globe, including Thames-Coromandel district.
