Kaipara’s Total Fire Ban has been lifted and replaced with an Open Season following further rain around the District. However care is still needed.

The removal of the Prohibited Fire Season is effective immediately and means that fires are again permitted in the open without a permit throughout most of the District. However permits are needed, all year, within one kilometre of any forestry areas and Department of Conservation estate, such as at Tinopai, Pouto Peninsula and Kaihu.

Principal Rural Fire Officer, Fiona Vessey, says while the weekend rain was unevenly spread – 27 millimetres in Dargaville, 60 millimetres in Maungaturoto and a massive 140 millimetres in Kaeo in the Far North – the fire risk has been significantly reduced.

“But if we get a few days of fine, dry weather the vegetation will soon dry out again so care is still needed at all times.”

“Don’t hesitate to call the Council on 0800 727 059 if you need any information about fires or the permit areas.”

Ratepayers, residents and visitors are reminded that all fires must be attended at all times and a continuous supply of water provided to extinguish the fire should it go out of control or if the weather conditions change.
