Easy Victory For Kiwis In Davis Cup

New Zealand quickly wrapped up its Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group II clash against Malaysia with a 3-0 thrashing indoors at the Albany Tennis Park, North Harbour with the knowledge they were ruthless and efficient against a side which was not up to their standard.

 

The Kiwis didn’t drop a set in the doubles or on the first day of play when Rubin Statham and Dan King-Turner won their singles and set the tie up for the home side to take the contest in the doubles and King-Turner and GD Jones did so easily with a 6-1 6-4 6-2 victory over Yew Ming Si and Adam Jaya.

 

The match took one hour and 44 minutes with the New Zealand combination still looking in need of a run at its completion.

 

In reality the Malaysians weren’t up to much and the Kiwi side were efficient in the way they disposed of them despite the knowledge they were always going to win.

 

“I’m Happy with first round win,” said team captain James Greenhalgh. “It’s one step close to ultimate goal this year – Group I. The team is conscious of the fact ties get more difficult as year goes on and it’s a step up for either Indonesia or Kuwait,” said Greenhalgh.

 

With the reverse singles now ‘dead’ matches it will be a chance for team captain, James Greenhalgh to give reserve player Adam Thompson a run or see if Jones wants to play singles or perhaps give Statham or King-Turner another match before they play the ASB Pro Circuit around the country.

 

The reverse singles start at 11am, Sunday.
