Table Tennis Talent Heads Overseas

New Zealand’s talented young table tennis player, Kevin Wu is on a mission to rise up the ranks while taking part in a trip of a lifetime to train and play against some of the world’s best players meaning he might achieve his goals of being up with the world’s best.

 

The St Kentigern College student spent time in Sweden as part of the world cadet challenge late in 2008 and since then has continued his good form domestically.

 

Wu who left for overseas on the weekend had earlier this month won the 18’s and 15’s boys singles at the Auckland Summer Table Tennis Open and reached the quarters of the men’s senior event before losing to eventual winner, Jong Eub Han of Korea.

 

“Kevin is one of New Zealand’s most promising junior table tennis athletes, this latest trip away will do so much good for him. He had a national senior ranking of No7 at the end of the 2008 season while still only 14-years-old. Kevin has a bright future ahead of him being New Zealand youngest ever senior men’s table tennis representative,” says Shane Warbrooke, Table Tennis New Zealand High Performance Director.

 

He has been selected to attend the 2009 world championships at Yokohama, Japan in April and May. Initially Wu will be training in Guangdong, China with the regions professional table tennis team.

 

Following the world champs he will travel to Europe competing in the Wolverhamption Grand Prix event in Britain and the International Table Tennis Federation French Junior Circuit as a build up the 2009 Commonwealth championships in Glasgow, Scotland in late May.

 

Wu trains every day of the week around two hours a day at the Auckland Table Tennis Centre in Gillies Ave.
