CHRISTCHURCH

Set up to focus on coffee and enjoyment has not stopped the Warmup Cycle team from having its fair share of success this summer.

The squad was announced in January with a focus on enjoying the team concept, coffee and performing well in Canterbury regional races, the Benchmark series and targeted tours.

The team has featured in the opening two rounds of the Benchmark elite road racing series with tour leader and national champion Gordon McCauley paying tribute to the team, and its team work, in his race winning speech after the opening round in the series and in online forum Vorb.

Warmup is currently one of the leading division two teams in the series with four rounds to go.

Benchmark Homes Tour Race Director Greg Hume has been impressed with the contribution the Warmup Cycling Team has made to the 2009 series.

“Warmup has taken to the series with enthusiasm and embraced the teams-based racing concept,” he said.

“Whilst the roster may currently be lacking a big-named rider, the camaraderie amongst the team will be its key to achieving results in its first year together. Already the team has been prominent in the first two rounds of the Benchmark, and can look forward soon to getting one of its riders onto the podium “.

Various team members have also been prominent in regional races throughout the Canterbury region and Nigel Pink recently won his age group category in the Canterbury Time Trial Association Championships after a series of Time Trail races over the summer.

“We have been enjoying our riding and racing and get on well as a team,” Team Manager Kelly Chapman said.

“It’s great we have had some of the team on the podium in various races and that we have been recognised for our professionalism – we have definitely been noticed.”

“We’re now looking forward to the Tour of Canterbury this weekend, the continuing Benchmark series and Tour de Lakes based in Central Otago and Northern Southland in April.”
