On Wednesday 18 March 2009, thousands of people across New Zealand will be leaving their cars at home and walking to work with friends, family and colleagues - why not dig out your sneakers and join them!

Walkers can pop into Kaimanawa Reserve on Rifle Range Road between 8 and 9am on Walk2Work day to collect their free breakfast and go into the draw to win a spot prize.

The aim of the Walk2Work national campaign is to encourage active and healthy lifestyles for New Zealanders with the long term goal of reducing disease, stress and illness. Walkers are also making a contribution to the environment, reducing fuel emissions and congestion by not driving.

Taupo District Council Road Safety Coordinator Christine Hutchison says rain, hail or shine – Walk2Work will go ahead and there will be a delicious breakfast waiting at Kaimanawa Reserve for those that make the effort.

“This campaign is about encouraging people to think of alternative options for getting to work. We know it is not realistic for everyone to walk all of the time, but it would be great if residents would consider walking even 1 – 2 days a week,” she said.

Walk2Work events are being held in Auckland City, North Shore, Bay of Plenty and Lakes district, Levin, Wellington, Lower Hutt, Nelson, Tasman district, West Coast, Christchurch, Dunedin and Taupo.
