Marlborough Boys’ Richard Anderson rode strongly today to take the win in the RaboPlus New Zealand Secondary Schools (NZSS) Cross Country Mountain Bike Championships in Levin.

The win further signalling to national selectors the Under 19 rider should be in contention for selection at the upcoming Mountain Bike World Championships to be held in August later this year having ridden to second place at the recent RaboPlus National Mountain Bike Championships in Nelson.

Anderson lead throughout the entire race with Bradley Hudson (St Thomas HS) less than a minute behind in second and Sam Shaw (Rotorua Lakes) in third place.

Current Under 19 National Champion Alexa Peters (Rotorua Lakes) continued her good form winning her race from Macleans College rider Sasha Smith by almost a minute and a half after trailing Sasha in the first lap. Sarah Kate McDonald (Dunstan High School) finished in third after moving up an age category from her Under 16 win in 2008.

Over two hundred riders rode in near perfect conditions at the twelfth annual NZSS Championships today. Racing continues tomorrow with the UpHill (at 8.30am) and Downhill events being contested.
