Waikato Stud: Australasia’s Leading Gr.1 Stud this Decade

By virtue of individual Group One winners in New Zealand and Australia during any given season this decade, Waikato Stud has assumed the mantle as Australasia’s leading Gr.1 stud*.

According to research gathered by New Zealand Thoroughbred Marketing, Waikato Stud has surpassed the individual Gr.1 record previously held by Woodlands Stud.

Laying down the gauntlet to breeders, Woodlands Stud’s cerise army generated 5 Gr.1 winners in 2002/03 via Lonhro, Ambulance, Freemason, Kusi and Yell.

In what has been a season of all seasons, the Chittick family’s Waikato Stud has now dismissed this record tally with 6 individual Gr.1 winners this term.

Waikato Stud’s 2008/09 super six comprise:

“It’s a tremendous achievement for the stud,” said New Zealand’s four time Breeder of the Year, Garry Chittick.

“In 2005/06 we had 5 Gr.1 winners worldwide - which we were really chuffed about, but to set an Australasian record three seasons later, really is a great endorsement for the stud”.

Previously heralded on the international stage with the outstanding galloper Starcraft (NZ), Waikato Stud could potentially advance this Gr.1 tally with a number of lightly-tried gallopers at Queensland’s upcoming Winter Carnival.
