Thomas Reynolds (North West) was the best of the New Zealanders in the relay at the Junior World Championships, coming in on the first leg in 5th place.

Reynolds held the pack well, heading the number one kiwi team. Reynolds passed off to Sam McNally, who after the first spectator was doing well to hold onto the leading Swedish and Norwegian teams. McNally was still part of the main bunch at that stage, however chose what was to be a faster route choice, however he slipped back after making some crucial mistakes on the course before passing off to Jack Vincent (Hawke's Bay).

Vincent headed out and had a solid performance to bring the team back in an official placing of 18th.

In the womens top team it was Lizzie Ingham (Wellington) who was the surprise pick for first leg. Ingham did her own thing on the course, and was just on the back of the lead pack coming through the first spectator. She looked to be struggling for pace however and as she came through the second spectator she was down by a few minutes off the lead pack. It was a surprise move for the supporters to have Ingham running first leg, with much anticipating Greta Knarston (Counties Manukau) to run first after her strong run in the long distance where she used other competitors extremely well. Ingham came in without any runners around her about 5 minutes down on the lead pack, passing off to Tineke Berthelsen (Hamilton).

Berthelsen had a very good run out on the course and looked very strong. Berthelsen passed off the Knarston in an unofficial place of about 11th, with Knarston looking brilliant by the first spectator. Knarston however lost time from then onwards and a few places, finishing in an official place of 15th.

The difference between unofficial places and official is that each country can only have its best result count in the official results. The countries second placed team is ignored in the official results.
