As winter approaches, Oamaru women will be learning what can be done to make motoring safer on a cold frosty morning.

Southern Districts road safety workers and agencies have combined to promote safe winter driving messages. Selected employers in North Otago will receive packs of information, ice scrapers, window cloths and other useful items. Waitaki Road Safety Inc will be distributing ice scrapers in number of locations through out the Waitaki District such as service stations, AA office etc.

Winter brings ice, snow, slippery surfaces, poor light and difficult night time driving conditions' all things that make driving over the coming months more challenging than at other times of the year.

Waitaki Road Safety chair person Kevin Murdoch said “frost and ice can occur anywhere. Just as weather conditions can change during a trip, so too can road conditions. Pick up your ice scrappers, stick it in your wallet or car and the best thing is they are free".

As part of the programme, local tyre company Beaurepaires will be running a two hour workshop on car maintenance for local women. This workshop will include checking engine oil, water, wiper blades and lights. There will be a session on tyres and one on wheel alignment and changing wheels. The workshop will be run on Thursday 28 May, 6pm-8pm. Registration for the limited spaces can be made through Alison Banks, Waitaki Community Safety Officer, telephone 434-5284.

Alison Banks said “be prepared for the unexpected. Winter roads need winter drivers. Safe driving in winter is about being aware, taking care and adjusting your speed to reflect the conditions which can change quickly, often without warning. She also encouraged motorists to plan their journeys, allow extra time, and check road condition information before setting out. People should avoid unnecessary trips during periods of high risk such as during the night or in the early morning.
