ORC director environmental information and science Dr John Threlfall said heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are predicted in the headwater of the Upper Clutha and Kawarau Rivers over the next few days. Up to 200mm is likely along the main divide of the Southern Alps between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. An additional 200 to 300mm of rain is possible between Friday night and Sunday morning.

The Clutha River/Mata-Au is also likely to rise rapidly over the coming weekend. The river is likely to remain high for several days, as floodwaters drain from the upper catchment.

The ORC recommends that people keep up to date with the latest rainfall and river flow information by accessing the Waterinfo service. This can be accessed via the internet on www.orc.govt.nz/waterinfo, or by phoning 0800 426 463.
