The future of Herbert Transfer Station was decided at a meeting of the Waitaki District Council on 26 May. From 1 July 2009, Council’s transfer station just south of Herbert on State Highway 1 will close. Over recent years the future of Herbert Transfer Station has been debated on account of the close proximity to alternative facilities at Oamaru and Hampden. Council had to make some difficult decisions regarding which services the community can afford to provide.

Closing Herbert Transfer Station will save the community $25,000 in 2009/10 and $33,000 a year after that.

Herbert Transfer Station will be replaced with a drop off point for recyclables at a location yet to be decided, in the Herbert township.
