The recent debate held in Turangi around the use of 1080 is to be continued in Taupo.
At yesterday’s Taupo District Council meeting, a recommendation from the Turangi/Tongariro Community Board was given to the Council.
The board believes that tuberculosis-related possum control programmes should continue but the widespread aerial use of 1080 as a method for such control should be banned. It has recommended that Taupo District Council advocates with central government and other appropriate agencies on these matters.
Mayor Rick Cooper suggested a debate be organised between two sets of experts, who can provide arguments for and against the 1080 issue, allowing Councillors and the public to make an informed decision. The debate will be held at 6pm, Tuesday 9 June at the Great Lake Centre.
