Every year, hard working locals are recognised by the district for their contribution to the community and their endless giving. It is no different in 2009.

Community Development Officer Kate Whareaitu says that although the closing date is this Friday at 4.30pm, there has been a lot of interest already.

“The criteria for nomination are strict, but plenty of nominations are received each year, and 2009 is no different,” Kate says.

It’s an extremely difficult job to go through the nominations, says Stratford District Mayor John Edwards. “There are many people in our area who work tirelessly for the greater good of our community and it is a privilege to be able to acknowledge some of those people. The committee’s decisions are difficult and are not made lightly.”

Previous award recipients include: Clive Wheeler, David Garlick, Noelene Tipler, Margaret Vickers, Isabel Walter, Lindsay Drinkwater, Noel Webby, Dick Habershon, David West, Gwelfa Burgess, Ray Ratu, and Jack Jeffares.

Mayor Edwards said “I would encourage residents to think about people in our community who quietly and efficiently give so much of themselves. This is a grand opportunity to appropriately acknowledge these people”, he said.

Nominations for Citizen Awards close this Friday 5 June and a presentation ceremony will be held on 15 July. Everyone in the community is welcome to attend.
