Taupo District Emergency Manager is urging people to think about their “Get Ready, Get Thru” preparations and to get their essential emergency kits together.

Emergency Manager Phil Parker says with the influenza H1N1 "swine flu" virus now declared at pandemic levels globally, it’s a good opportunity to review how ready we are for an emergency.

“For people who contract a flu virus, a week in quarantine could pose problems if there's not enough food or essential supplies in the house. I would advise people to review their food stocks along with medicines and essential household items and make sure they have enough to last a week at least," he said.

Mr Parker also advises people to review family and friends contacts and networks to ensure that there's someone to call on to provide assistance if necessary.

With the virus now spreading throughout New Zealand the Taupo District Council are working closely with health providers and the Lakes District Health Board to inform the community of what they can do to minimize the effect this virus may have on the community.

If you have any concern's about H1N1 virus or you are showing signs of flu please call the Health line 0800 611 116.
