Taupo District Council has installed special mixing equipment at the Whareroa wastewater treatment plant which is aimed at reducing odours for local residents.

The devices, called aerators, are effectively big mixers that float on the surface of the wastewater oxidation ponds. They mix the wastewater, putting air back into the lower layers of the pond to manage the anaerobic conditions occurring which are associated with odour issues at the plant.

The purchase of the aerators is part of Council’s plan to upgrade the plant, improving the degree of treatment it can provide and will reduce the unpleasant odours that occur.

Group Manager, Infrastructure and Parks, Ted Anderson says Council is pleased with the operation, which will provide relief from sewage odour for Whareroa residents close to the plant.
