In Sydney on Tuesday July 7th, Greenpeace is launching the first True Food Guide Alcoholic Drinks edition, the only shopping guide for genetically engineered (GE) free alcoholic drinks.

This follows the True Food Guide Canola edition for GE free shopping, launched in November 2008. In the absence of strong Australian labelling laws for GE ingredients in food and drinks, the True Food Guide protects consumer choice with a Green (GE free) and Red (may contain GE-derived ingredients) list of top Alcoholic drinks.

While not the usual suspects in the GE food chain, alcoholic beverages face potential contamination from GE ingredients in several ways. One example is that of GE canola, which is now being grown in NSW, VIC and WA and has the potential to expose vineyards and other crops to the risks of GE contamination. This threatens the “clean & green” reputation of our wine in key export markets. Greenpeace is working hard to keep GE crops out of Australian soil, and out of our food and drinks.

It is the first of it’s kind, and heralds a groundbreaking commitment from some of our finest and best loved winemakers, brewers and distillers to ensuring that our drinks are free from GE ingredients.

We cordially invite you to the launch of the Alcoholic Drinks Edition of the True Food Guide on 7 July.
