Foster Construction Ltd has been awarded the main contract for construction of Claudelands Arena.

The contract was approved at a Hamilton City Council Contracts Sub-committee meeting on 30 June for the provisional contract sum of $36,874,565 plus GST, with the scope of work including construction of the arena and entry plaza, and supply and installation of the seating system and kitchen equipment.

Foster Construction was named as the preferred tenderer for the arena build in May, following an extensive tender and vendor proposal evaluation process. This early engagement with Foster Construction has allowed final detailed designs to be extensively worked through prior to construction and any potential opportunities for cost savings to be identified.

Hamilton Mayor Bob Simcock said the awarding of the contract was the final step needed before physical works can get underway on the project.

"After some many months of community consultation, it is great to be able to award this contract and see construction finally get underway on site," he said.

"Once complete, the 5000-capacity indoor arena will be a focal point for exciting events, vibrancy and economic activity, and will be an asset that will generate tremendous city pride."

Physical works on the arena will begin next week and will be marked with a blessing on site next Tuesday [7 July].
