Whanau Swim, with its five free swimming lessons, makes a welcomed return at swim schools in Onehunga, Mt Roskill and Panmure next week, July 13-17.

The lessons, one each day Monday to Friday, give families the opportunity to learn basic swimming and water safety skills together, all in a fun and positive environment.

Whanau Swim will run at the following locations but numbers are limited so families must book with the pool directly to take advantage of this great opportunity.

· Lagoon Leisure and Fitness, Panmure, ph 09 570 9061
· Mt Roskill Aquasport, Mt Roskill, ph 09 624 6058
· Onegunga Aquasport, Onehunga, ph 636 1129

Swimming is the most popular leisure activity for boys and girls in New Zealand (SPARC), yet in a country where drowning is the third highest cause of accidental death there are still too many children who have not had the opportunity to learn swimming and survival skills.

Children must be accompanied in the water by a parent/caregiver, reinforcing the importance of close and active supervision of children in, on and around water and giving parents the skills to continue the learning after lessons have finished.

Whanau Swim is a collaborative initiative between WaterSafe Auckland, Auckland City Communities Living Injury Free, Preventing Injury Through Action (PITA), Auckland District Health Board, Community Leisure Management, Y Swim School, SwimMagic Swim School and Hilton Brown SWIMMING, with support from the Mt Wellington Foundation.
