Destination Lake Taupo’s newly appointed general manager, Scott Pearson, will bring with him a variety of skills from different sectors of the tourism industry.

Pearson has held a number of roles both in New Zealand and in the United States, with close links to the adventure tourism industry. He understands the dynamics of the tourism sector well and feels his varied experience has given him the right set of skills to run such an organisation.

"I am very enthusiastic about the new role and feel privileged to promote such a fantastic visitor destination of international repute,” says Pearson.

Pearson is currently General Manager for Alpine Pacific Tourism, which undertakes destination marketing and management for North Canterbury. Pearson says he sees some advantages in coming from out of the area. “Being new to Lake Taupo provides an advantage in looking at how the region is presented from a visitor’s point of view.

“Destination Lake Taupo (DLT), as a regional tourism organisation, is well respected amongst industry peers and I intend to continue that tradition by leading and working alongside the DLT team,” he says.
Pearson says one of his first priorities as general manager will be to quickly ascertain what immediate support is required for the local industry and whether he has the right information to make informed decisions for the short and long term future of Lake Taupo’s tourism industry.

With regard to working with neighbouring regions, Pearson believes ‘The Great New Zealand Touring Route’ is currently the best touring route model in the country. “We will continue to provide innovative ways to package the Lake Taupo region as an integral component of North Island itineraries for international visitors,” he says.

Taupo District Council’s deputy chief executive, Anne McLeod, says Mr Pearson has a challenging time ahead of him but she is confident his depth of experience in similar roles will ensure can hit the ground running.

Pearson grew up in Nelson and has lived in the North Island, as well as travelling widely overseas. He, his wife and two sons enjoy time outdoors and feel the Taupo region has a lot to offer young families.

“The Lake Taupo region and surrounding area is blessed with a number of high profile points of difference. The types of experiences available fit favourably under the 100% Pure New Zealand Brand; across natural, cultural, activity and service areas. The Lake Taupo Brand is strong and evolving, with a story we need to tell the world,” Pearson says.

Pearson will be begin his role with DLT in mid-August.
