Another round of free gardening tips is on offer from New Plymouth District Council – this time for owners of roses.

During the next two weeks there will be three demonstrations on how to prune roses, conducted by Council horticulturalists.

“This is the time of year when we get around the public rose gardens to give them their winter prune, and we thought the public would appreciate getting some tips from the experts that they can use in their own gardens,” says Manager Parks Mark Bruhn.

“We want to demystify the art of rose pruning and help people get the best out of their plants.”

The demonstrations will run from 11am to noon at the following venues:

Hempton Rose Garden, New Plymouth – on Saturday 18 and Monday 20 July. Access off Hempton Street (next to Marsland Hill).
Donaldson Rose Garden, Pukekohe Domain, Waitara – on Saturday 25 July. Access off Browne St (near the railway line).
“Everyone is welcome to come along and ask our staff any questions they have about their own roses,” says Mr Bruhn.

The rose pruning demonstrations follow previous demo’s on how to prune stone-fruit and pip-fruit trees, and lawn maintenance.

Mr Bruhn says more than 150 people in total attended those events and he expects the rose prunings to be just as popular.

“There will be more demonstrations coming up as the seasons change, and we’ll announce those closer to the time,” he says.
