The proof of Taranaki’s decades of expertise in horticulture can now be seen in Pukekura Park’s Fernery and Display Houses.

A new display called Treasures of Taranaki showcases plants that are Taranaki-bred, with many being created by some of the region’s most highly respected names.

“Taranaki is famous in the horticulture industry for the plants that have been hybridised, selected and developed in our region,” says Curator Pukekura Park Chris Connolly.

“We’ve had generations of horticulturalists who love the challenge of creating the perfect plant that accentuates the qualities of the genus, whether it be the flower colour or shape, foliage, plant form, or suitability to certain conditions.

“This new display means we can showcase Taranaki’s horticulture expertise and the depth of the work that has been undertaken for several decades in the region.

“We are working to build up the collection of Taranaki-bred and selected plants and as they become available, they will be included and highlighted in the display.”

Featuring in the first display are magnolias, camellias and rhododendrons bred by plantsmen Vance Hooper and Felix, Mark and Les Jury, and clivias bred by Tony Barnes.

Mr Connolly says the fernery staff would be happy to hear from visitors about any Taranaki-bred plants they know about.
