TAUPO

Lake Taupo has been awarded the rights to host a trans-Tasman touch rugby series next month.

A total of 36 teams will compete in the two-day tournament organised by New Zealand Touch Barbarians on 25 and 26 September. The event is expected to bring around 1000 players, official and supporters to Lake Taupo.
Hosting of the annual tournament alternates between New Zealand and Australia. This will be the first time the New Zealand section of the event is held outside of Auckland.

Destination Lake Taupo’s Event Manager, Warwick Hall, is thrilled the organisers chose Taupo. “It is the tournament’s 10th anniversary and they wanted to do something a little different to the norm of holding it in Auckland. The organisers looked further afield and, after a brief discussion, Taupo appeared as the logical choice.”

Together with the Mizuno Off-road Half Marathon, The Jamis Bicycles Day Night Thriller, the Taupo 1000 Off-Road Endurance Race and the 16th Annual Sika Show, the month of September is set to be a busy one for the region.
