Borders Queen Street, Auckland was awarded the prestigious Bookseller of the Year award this week at the 2007 THORPE-Bowker New Zealand Book Industry Awards.

The Awards celebrate outstanding achievement in New Zealand bookselling and publishing and are voted on by booksellers and publishers across the country.

They were presented alongside the Spectrum Print Book Design Awards and the Nielsen BookData New Zealand Booksellers' Choice Award.

It is the first award of its kind for Borders in New Zealand and a significant achievement for the expanding group.

Justin Barratt, New Zealand Regional Manger for Borders Asia Pacific, says he is proud to be creating a milestone in Borders history in New Zealand.

"We have gone from strength to strength at Borders in New Zealand over the past few years and we are all very excited to be part of this significant growth phase," he said.

"Being recognised as the bookseller of the year is a tremendous acknowledgment of the commitment and hardwork of our team in New Zealand to delivering a books and music destination for our customers," Justin said after receiving the Award.

The Award recognises the point of difference Borders Queen Street has established within the New Zealand book industry.

Justin believes it was not only passion but also commitment to the New Zealand book industry which contributed to the store's award.

"Borders New Zealand stores are part of our Asia Pacific family and our reputation for creating a stimulating retail environment certainly speaks for itself," Justin said.

For the Borders Queen Street store it is 'onwards and upwards' beyond this industry recongition, with the opening of a new Paperchase store within Borders Queen Street next week which will sell greeting cards and gift wrap and packaging, stationery, wedding items, art papers and art materials.

Borders currently has stores in Queen Street and Sylvia Park Shopping Centre in Auckland, Westfield Riccarton in Christchurch and Capital on Quay in Wellington.

Its fifth New Zealand store will open later this year in Albany, Auckland.
