Next Wednesday, Taupo Motorsport Park is opening its track to young drivers to encourage them to improve their driving ability.

The “Driver Directions” young drivers event invites teenagers aged 13 to 19 to practise basic driving skills like parking, reversing, driving on limited traction surfaces, and some track driving skills including slalom and braking skills.

Taupo Nui-a-Tia College, Taupo Motorsport Park and Taupo District Council are organising the event which is a follow on from a theory-based driver education evening for parents last month. The on-track day will give parents and caregivers the chance to take their teen into a real driving situation in a safe environment regardless of their driving experience level or licence. The event will also feature a Crash Research Road Show with various simulators and guidance on legal requirements to modifying vehicles.

Taupo Motorsport Park CEO Mark Pedersen is pleased to be able to give back to the community by allowing the open-day to happen. “Road safety is an important issue, and I’m happy to see these teens being given the skills they need out on the roads.”

All participating young drivers must bring a suitable car and a caregiver, and arrive before 10am, after which time the Motorsport Park gate will be locked. Any dangerous or inappropriate behaviour will result in eviction from the track.

Taupo Nui-a-Tia College teacher Jeremy Ball, who also organised the parents’ education evening, says this is an amazing opportunity for parents to teach their teens safe driving practices. “Too often teens are let loose on the roads with a restricted licence without knowing the basics. The more time spent behind the wheel practising these basic skills the better for our young drivers.”

Anyone wishing to attend needs to register by calling Taupo Nui-a-Tia College on 07 376 1100 and give your name, caregivers name and contact details. Spaces are limited.
