TAUPO

Civil Defence Taupo are advising drivers of abandoned vehicles to make their way to the Great Lake Centre by 9am Tuesday, so the co-ordination effort can get underway

Those being accommodated in the local marae will be picked up by buses in the morning but those in private or commercial accommodation will need to make their way to the Great Lake Centre, in the centre of town, to join the others by 9am.

Weather permitting, Civil Defence will begin transporting car owner/drivers to the Rangitaiki area where an orderly process will take place to match them with their cars - with the closest vehicles being accessed first etc. There are reports of at least 150 cars still stranded on the Taupo side of the Napier Taupo Highway.

Drivers who go to the Great Lake Centre are being asked to bring their car keys, if they still have them, and some form of identification.

For public information call 0800 ASK TDC.

Travellers wanting to travel through Taupo are advised to keep an eye on weather reports and www.transit.govt.nz or www.aaroadwatch.co.nz to check on the status of road closures.
