A new electronic system of monitoring parking will keep short term parking flowing freely without the need to install paid parking in Taupo’s CBD.

Group Manager Gareth Green said, “the fact that Taupo does not have paid parking is something many locals and visitors value. However we need to ensure these spaces are being freed up for shoppers and this means sticking to the time limits as signposted throughout the CBD. The meter eyes work very well to achieve both objectives by monitoring parking in the CBD more efficiently and only penalising those who are exceeding the time limits.”

The meter eyes are small electronic devices, similar in size to cats eyes used on roads, which will gather useful data on the vehicle movements in the CBD and will monitor parking time limits; replacing the current manual process of chalking car tyres.

Once completed there will be 880 meter eyes installed throughout the CBD and also in and around Story Place where existing parking restrictions are in place.

Installation will be planned around any other works programmes undertaken by Council.
