Two charged over cheese theft

A man and a woman have been charged following the recovery of cheese believed stolen from a train en route to Auckland.

The 23-year-old woman and 21-year-old man were arrested around 7.30am after a rail worker alerted police to suspicious activity around the rail track at Kakariki near Halcombe.

Boxes of 20 kilo blocks of cheese were recovered and it was later confirmed that five containers of a train en route to Auckland, that that passed through the area in the early hours of the morning, had been broken into.

The 23-year-old woman from Marton has been charged with burglary, receiving stolen goods, possession of a Class A and B drug and possession of drug utensils.

The 21-year-old man from Hunterville has been charged with burglary, receiving stolen goods, possession of a Class B drug and permitting a vehicle to be used for an offence against the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Both have been bailed on conditions to appear at Feilding District Court on Monday 16 November.
