HAMILTON

A cordon has been established and a scene examination is commenced following a homicide in the Hamilton suburb of Chartwell overnight.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Nigel Keall said Police were called to the Bellmont Ave address about 1.30am.

"We're currently working to establish what has occurred and at this stage it appears there has been a drinking session in the garage of the address with a number of people attending.

"The 28-year-old occupier of the home and a male friend became involved in a confrontation with a group of men in the driveway during which our victim suffered a fatal head injury to the side of the head."

Mr Keall said Police believe the fatal injury was caused by a weapon of some sort."

Falling to the ground the victim was repeatedly kicked by members of the group and his friend suffered facial injuries when he tried to intercede.

Mr Keall said a focus of the scene examination is recovering the weapon used while the inquiry team will be working to establish the identities of those who were at the address.

"We'd like to hear from anyone who attended the party who hasn't already been spoken to by Police and from anyone in the area who may find a weapon dumped on their property."

Anyone with information on what occurred at the address is asked to contact Mr Keall at the Hamilton Central Police Station on 07 858 6200.

Alternatively information can be left anonymously on the confidential crime line, 0800 Busthem (0800 287843).
