Homicide inquiry in Queenstown

QUEENSTOWN

Police in Otago have begun a homicide investigation after a death in central Queenstown overnight.

Police were called to a taxi stand in Camp St around 11.30 pm on Thursday 19th November after receiving a report of a man lying unconscious in the street. In spite of attempts by Police, members of the public and ambulance staff, the man could not be resuscitated and died at the scene.

A 35 year old man has been arrested and charged with assault. He will appear in the Queenstown District Court today.

The victim, a middle aged Caucasian man, has not yet been identified.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed an altercation on Camp Street around 11.30 pm to contact them on the dedicated witness line (03) 441 1629.

A portion of Camp Street remains closed and is likely to remain closed for most of the day.
