Franklin motorbike riders will be more visible on our roads thanks to a bright safety initiative.

The ‘Look Out For Motorbikes’ campaign offers free safety packs to local riders, which includes a high visibility (vis) safety vest.

The risk of being involved in a fatal or injury crash is more than ten times as high for a motorcyclist as for a car driver.

Franklin District Council Road Safety Coordinator Monique Haines, says “We’re offering the free packs to all local riders. They include the fluro high vis vests, which greatly increase the visibility of riders. Lack of visibility is one of the key causes of crashes between vehicles and motorbikes. I stress to all riders and passengers on motorbikes the importance of wearing a fluro vest.”

The free ‘Look Out For Motorbikes’ packs also contain a safety gear guide, rider information, safe riding DVDs and a polishing cloth.

The safety campaign is part of the Ride Forever campaign, run by ACC and supported by Councils and Police. Franklin District Council also holds regular Basic Skills Handling tests for local riders as part of the campaign, and will be promoting rider safety messages with Counties Manukau Serious Crash Unit at the Waiuku Christmas Parade.

Motorbike riders can collect a ‘Look Out For Motorbikes’ pack from Franklin District Council by calling Monique first on 237 1300. Local bike shops Mr Motorcycles, Counties Honda and Full Throttle are also giving out the packs to new bike purchasers.
