At its November meeting the Holcim (New Zealand) Ltd Board were updated on the company’s cement supply options project following the Environment Court decision which granted the company all consents it needs to construct and operate its proposed new cement plant and associated quarries and pits near Oamaru.

A newsletter being circulated this week to approximately 8,000 Oamaru residents and other key stakeholders outlines that the Board confirmed its support for further work to proceed on the formal proposal which will go to parent company Holcim Ltd, which makes the final decision on the project. Holcim New Zealand does not anticipate submitting the detailed investment proposal to Holcim Ltd before late 2010.

The newsletter also thanks the many people, groups and organisations who have met and spoken with Holcim team members throughout 2009 and since May 2006 when the project was first announced.

“Over the last three years we’ve appreciated the many opportunities to talk with locals and others with an interest in the project,” said Capital Projects Manager, Ken Cowie.

The company’s commitment to the communities in which it operates is also highlighted with details of its Community Support Programme which has supported more than 50 projects throughout 2009. The programme was recognised recently with a Department of Conservation Award.
