Fatal truck crash in Bay of Plenty

7.50am - A truck has gone down an 80mtr bank on Thompsons Track. Thompsons Track runs between Katikati and Te Aroha in the Kaimai-Mamaku Forest, Western Bay of Plenty.

Unfortunately, the sole occupant of the vehicle has died. He is a male aged 31 years. Further details of the deceased person are suppressed until family have been advised. Emergency services are all present and have had difficulty reaching the vehicle. A helicopter cannot be used due to weather conditions.

4-wheel drive vehicles are being used to reach the scene and to recover the vehicle and occupant. Winches are currently being used for this purpose. It is unknown as to how long the recovery will take.

Update - A helicopter is now transporting a Fire Crew directly to the scene and the Police Serious Crash Unit are being transported into the area via 4-wheel drive vehicle.
